Meet

Jan Wrentmore

Red Onion Saloon is a woman-owned business, owned by Jan Wrentmore, who moved to Skagway in 1978. When Wrentmore arrived in Skagway, she quickly fell in love with the old building that was once the Red Onion, and considered the classiest dance hall and saloon in town. Now, many years later, Wrentmore is considered an iconic female leader and businesswoman, whose passion, strength and value of sisterhood, inspires the community of Skagway and beyond.

Wrentmore's vision to preserve the old building and to capture the spirit of the era, has become realized as thousands of locals and tourists step back in time to enjoy stories, get a peek at the famous Red Onion Brothel, and a glimpse of what "once was" in the bustling gold rush town of Skagway. With much of the original features intact, Red Onion Saloon captures the Gold Rush days, and each year history is relived through tours, visits to the museum, or by enjoying a meal in the restaurant.
